Your church felt like home, until it didn't.
Maybe a leader let you down. Maybe a conflict divided a community you loved. Maybe you were judged when you were struggling, you felt pressured to perform, or you were worn down slowly over years until one Sunday you just stopped going back.
Whatever brought you here, you don't have to explain it before you are welcome.
At Tables Church, we don't believe the answer to church hurt is finding a church full of better people. We're not a group of people who have it all figured out, and we don't want to pretend otherwise. We don't hope in good people.
The hope we have is Jesus.
We are all coming to Jesus, believing that He will shape us into better kinds of people, more honest, more humble, more gracious, more willing to listen, and more like Him. If you've been hurt by church, we know it will be difficult to trust right away. You don't have to rush it. But we hope you will find a community that keeps pointing beyond itself to Jesus.
You may be carrying disappointment, anger, grief, skepticism, questions, or a deep sense of exhaustion. You may not even be sure what you believe about church anymore.
You are not the first person to feel that way here. We have all kinds of backgrounds and histories sitting around our tables. Many of us are here for a spiritual reset.
We are not going to ask you to explain your story before you are welcome at a table. We are not going to pressure you to forgive quickly, trust immediately, serve right away, or act as though you are fine. You can come cautiously. You can come with questions. You can come and simply listen.
Come anyway.
Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
- Jesus. Matthew 11:28
People fail each other, even people who mean well, carry leadership titles, know the Bible, or sincerely want to follow God. That doesn’t make the harm less real. It means we don't need more polished people, impressive programs, or a church that promises never to make mistakes.
We need Jesus to change us.
At Tables Church, we want to be a community that keeps returning to Him. When we are wrong, we want to own it. When someone is hurting, we want to listen. When there are questions, we want to make room for them. When someone needs time, we carry each other's burdens.
We are all coming to Jesus, believing that He will shape us into better kinds of people.
That is not an excuse for harm or a way of lowering the standard for how people should be treated. It is a commitment to humility. None of us has arrived, all of us need grace, each of us is responsible for becoming more like Christ in our thoughts, attitudes, and decisions.
When we read the Gospels, we see Jesus doing much of His ministry around tables.
He ate with people. He listened to their questions. He made room for people others overlooked. He spoke truth with grace. He made room for people to ask questions, wrestle with faith, and be known.
That is the kind of community we are trying to become.
Rather than sitting in rows facing a stage, we gather around tables. We read Scripture together, hear a short teaching, and then talk honestly about what God is doing. Questions are welcome. Doubts even more. You will not be called to the front, handed a microphone, or pressured to say more than you are ready to share.
If all you need right now is to sit quietly with us, that's okay too.
“Come as you are” can start to sound like a slogan after you have heard it enough times. So here is what it means at Tables Church:
Wanting to follow Jesus with us is enough. We’re ready when you are.
